Review by Desert Cities Guides Movie Guide Nick Jones

Just when I thought the dramatizations of the war in Iraq were finished and unsuccessful, along comes “The Hurt Locker,” a powerful film that follows an Army bomb squad in modern day Iraq. The film opens with a statement, “War is a drug.” It certainly is for Staff Sgt. William James (Jeremy Renner), who, on a day-to-day basis, is disarming bombs while under enemy fire.

As I opened the door and got out of my car last Saturday night July 25, 2009, in the parking lot of the Indio Performing Arts Center in the desert near Palm Springs, I was hit by the ugly heat and high humidity that had plagued the Coachella Valley for the last week or so. At that point, all I was looking for was a little refreshment. Little did I know that my refreshment would come in the form of a nice cool theater, some soft drinks (beer if I wanted it), pizza and a pleasant addition to The Big Show Live, in the form of musical talent.

The Harry Potter film series has certainly changed its tone. I remember a few years ago when the series was all about children, wondrous magic and the beautiful, colorful, alive halls of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Much has changed in those few years — the Hogwarts' beautiful halls are replaced with empty gothic corridors, the cheery tone with an ominous dark feeling, and one suspects the malevolent Lord Voldemort draws ever closer.

Palm Springs, Calif., is home to one of the largest, flyable collection of World War II aircraft in existence. It's not unusual to see a shark-nosed P-40 Warhawk fighter emblazoned with the insignia of the famous Flying Tigers or hear the rumble of a massive four-engined B-17 Flying Fortress bomber as they fly in the clear skies above this desert community.

Only an hour from Palm Springs, Calif., the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program commenced Sunday, July 12, with the Native American Arts Festival and will run through Saturday, July 18. The first event provided by the King Galleries of Scottsdale, Ariz., was a representation of pottery from various pueblos using traditional methods, while the styles are either contemporary or traditional. The traditional methodology consists of hand-rolling and coiling the clay, polishing by burnishing the pots with a stone, the paints being made by local materials and firing without electrical kilns. Each pueblo is distinct in the traditional method based on the materials unique to each respective area. The minerals in the clays differ from area to area. In the Santa Clara Pueblo, black dye can be made by boiling wild spinach into a tar or green dye by due to copper minerals being present. The firing varies also in how heat is produced, which could be by tree bark or as with the Hopi tribe using sheep's manure where trees are scarce.

Review by Palm Springs Guides Movie Guide Nick Jones

“I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars and you. What else do you need to know?” That statement sums up John Dillinger's life, and Michael Mann's latest film, “Public Enemies.” This true story of the legendary bank robber set in the '30s has a lot going for it — great performances, a solid story and the film was shot in high-definition. But there just seems to be something missing. Perhaps it was a pacing problem, the film can be quite slow at times. But no matter, the film is saved by Johnny Depp's performance.

Review by Palm Springs Guides Movie Guide Nick Jones

“Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” is the third film in the animated trilogy about prehistoric animals who form an interesting interspecies herd. The film revolves around a woolly mammoth couple, Manny and Ellie (Ray Romano and Queen Latifah) who about to have a child; an aging sabretooth tiger, Diego (Denis Leary), who isn't ready to settle down yet; Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) who yearns to also be a part of motherhood; and the newly introduced character, and perhaps the savior of this film, Buck, the eye-patch wearing, swashbuckling weasel (Simon Pegg). And of course Scrat the squirrel, on his never ending quest to secure the acorn.

With many trails in and around the Coachella Valley it is hard to pick which one to take next. My photographer and I decided that we would attempt to climb one of the most challenging hikes the Indian Canyons has to offer — Murray Hill. This hill is noted as being an extremely strenuous hike that tests endurance levels. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) describes these trail as, “remote and challenging” and advises hikers to pack as if they may have to stay overnight. The hill (which feels more like a peak upon completion) overlooks both the Indian Canyons to the east and the various Desert Cities to the north, west and south.
