Each year the Winter solstice, generally recognized as the first day and beginning of winter, occurs at the time when the Sun's position is at its greatest angular distance from the Earth. At this time our Sun is on the other side of the equatorial plane from the observer. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the shortest day of the year and yet from this day each day begins to grow longer and longer.
At the High Desert Winter Solstice Celebration it is not only the
beginning of Winter which is celebrated for the celebration honors
Mother Earth and all of Humanity. The program will include ceremony and
prayers for honoring both Mother Earth and humanity. There will also be
storytelling, drumming, singing, and peace chanting as well as an
opportunity to participate in building a Sacred Hoop.
The event is open to the general public. It will start and 12:00PM and
run through 3:00 PM. Participants are asked to bring a favorite dish
and join together for the pot-luck celebratory meal after the
ceremonies have concluded. Those desiring to participate in the
building of the Sacred Hoop are asked to bring a “loaf of bread” size
stone which can be left at the site as a marker and monument.
