One Night Only
Thursday, April 30, 2009 McCallum Theatre Palm Desert, California Story and photos by Pat Krause For more Pat Krause photos of "One Night Only," click here. Michael Childers presented the annual “One Night Only” event at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, Calif., on Thursday, April 30. This event brought the best of Broadway and Hollywood performers to this great stage. “One Night Only” benefited Jewish Family Services of the Desert. Childers continues bringing the best to the community. Even in these hard economic times, the McCallum was filled to capacity. He brought his vision to the people of the valley with top talent who unselfishly volunteered their time for this cause. This event would not be possible if not for the efforts of so many local philanthropists and friends of both the McCallum Theatre and the Jewish Family Services charity.

Stagecoach 2009 Summary
So, you couldn't attend Stagecoach? Not to worry! Desert Cities Guides was there for you at the Stagecoach Festuval at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif. We've already published stories and pictures by Pat Krause and Melissa Schoos on their Stagecoach experience. But Stagecoach was also attended by Desert Cities Guides photographers Yvonne Scott and Ken Dow. Yvonne is not only a talented photographer, but has the ability to see beyond the obvious. For example, did you know that not only did Stagecoach host world-class musical talent, it was the home to a prestigeous barbecue competition with a $40,000 purse? Check out Yvonne's take on the Stagecoach Festival by clicking here. I'm sure there may be someone somewhere who love music more than Ken Dow, but I've not met that person yet. Naturally, Ken was there for the entire Stagecoach Festival. To see Ken's Stagecoach photo essay, click here for Day One and Day Two.

Shirtless young men in tight jeans and cowboy boots? Is this what one expects to see when country fans gather? I had no idea. My exposure and knowledge of the modern-day cowboy has been mostly limited to the CMAs and an occasional concert or two. Imagine the education I received about "anything and everything" country when I attended the 2009 Stagecoach Festival!

Stagecoach 2009 began on Sat., April 25, and ended Sun., April 26. The two-day line up was fantastic. Everything from the big name stars from yesteryear to some of the top names in today's country music. Camping sold out early and the camping areas were packed. Parking spaces filled up early in the day as well, as record crowds filled the Empire Polo Grounds. Traffic is usually a problem, but security guards and the local police kept everything under control. It seemed a sea of people were always walking into the grounds at all times during the day.

Cedric the Entertainer came to Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella, Calif., Sat. night, April 18. Malik S of “Def Comedy Jam” fame opened his act. He takes everyday situations to a whole new level and makes us laugh at our situations and ourselves. He had a wacky tidbit to share with current job hunters — don't look in the classified job ads, look in the obituaries and contact that late person's employer for that position. His humor kept the audience responding and laughing.
